10 Holy Week Activities That’ll Make This Season More Meaningful!

Holy Week activities? So I suddenly think about them.

I don’t usually have plans for this season because I would rather stay at home (just like what I normally did the previous years).

But this year’s Holy Week is going to be extra special for me. Coz the day after Black Saturday, is my 40th birthday! (Oh, why did I even mention that?? haha)

But you know what, it’s nothing grand. I’m the type of person who doesn’t put too much emphasis on my birthday. It’s just what it is.

Just a simple celebration with my beloved family is more than enough for me.

I’m just grateful that I’ve come this far, still alive and kicking hehe.

And because it falls on Easter Sunday, I’d like to think that it’s a celebration of life and hope too. 🙂

Anyway, my lovely friends, I just want to share with you some interesting Holy Week activities. If you don’t have any plans yet, you better check these out!

Depending on your mood ( if you’re feeling spiritual, inspired, or drained) you can try some ideas below.

10 Holy Week Activities for everyone! I'm so glad I've found this list so I can Make This Holy Season More Meaningful! via https://thecheerfulspirit.blogspot.com

1. Visita Iglesia (Church visit)

I have yet to complete my seven church visits. I admit I’m not 100% religious but I’d love my children to learn some traditions I grew up with.

Besides, there are so many beautiful churches we can explore. Like this one below. This is our local church referred to as “Susi ng Tayabas” (Key of Tayabas) because it’s built in the shape of a key. It is the largest church in the province of Quezon.

So If you’re feeling spiritual, why not find the quietness and appreciate the rich history of that ancient architecture.

Remember to say your prayer, light a candle, and visit at least 7 churches (by tradition). Oh, and don’t forget to snap some photos 😉

2. Rest/Sleep

It’s tiring, right? I can feel you Moms. Give yourself a break from the worries over small things. We all deserve this after all, for sanity’s sake!

A complete set of uninterrupted sleep (though may seem impossible for us, Moms and Dads) can make a huuuge difference to our well being. It makes us feel better, reduces stress, spurs our creativity, etc.

Rest and sleep in general have some spiritual benefits too. Even the bible states the value of rest and restoration. Exodus chapter 20: 8-11, describes how God himself rested after he completed his work in 6 days.

So go ahead and snooze!

3. Reflect

I’m not sure about you but I feel like everywhere I look, everything seems solemn and slow during Holy Week.

Just by looking at the stillness outside opens up the chance for some introspection.

If this is you who want to re-examine life from the inside-out or search for a new meaning, then try this.

4. Read a good book

Still, on reflection, Holy Week’s a good time to pick up new reads. I recommend:
  • The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
  • The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren
  • The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage by Mel Robbins.

You can also read the inspiring life stories of

  • Audrey Hepburn
  • Jack Ma
  • Steve Jobs

5. Movie marathon

If you’re not so much into books, then grab a popcorn and watch these inspiring movies:

  • The Bible, if you want to be reminded spiritually
  • Pursuit of Happyness
  • Forrest Gump
  • Eat Pray Love
  • Slumdog Millionaire
  • Finding Nemo

I bet you’ll feel more inspired after watching these.

6. Reading of the Passion (Pabasa ng Pasyon)

Another solemn way to observe the Holy Week here in the Philippines is through “Pabasa ng Pasyon.”

It is the Catholic devotion that involves continuous chanting of the “Pasyon” (a 16th Century epic poem that narrates the life, passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ).

It is usually done with the elders and with the accompaniment of a guitar. I’m not sure though if this is still common in the Metro nowadays.

7. Be Crafty

Are you feeling inspired to create something pretty? Make it fun for you and your kids!

One of my goals this week is a DIY craft bunny for Easter. I’m sure my three years old will love it.

There are tons of ideas you can find on Pinterest like the one from The Best Ideas for Kids.  Or you can make your own, just try to be creative! 😉

8. Make a gratitude journal

Being grateful is one of the keys to happiness, do you believe that?  I do. And it’s been a constant practice ever since I heard the phrase “count your blessings.”

I attempted to make my own “30 Days of Gratitude” too in this blog series. It’s not yet finished but I promised myself I will :).

It’s always a good feeling when you read something positive about you, right? It takes the dark clouds away. At least, that’s what I feel when I’m writing.

So try it for yourself and see. You may never know but you are soooo much blessed dear ones. 🙂

If you practice abstinence and want to make it meatless, then go green! Take out some veggies or fruits and prepare a fresh, nutritious salad for the family. Or you may read this article from Sharp Aspirant to get loads of ideas.

10. Yoga

I’ve been meaning to do this but couldn’t find the time, or maybe I’ll start once I’m done with this post lol.

Even if you’re a fitness enthusiast or not, doing yoga is such a great way to develop your strength and flexibility as much as it relaxes your mind and body (which I badly needed). And you can do this even at home.

New to yoga? Try searching YouTube for more video tutorials or see this Yoga Poses for Beginners to get some help.

That’s it, lovelies! Hope you find some activities to do to make your Holy week more meaningful.
